Removable orthodontic treatment
Children who still have baby teeth are only rarely treated. When we do treat them, however, it is important — for example to avoid surgery later on. That’s why you should bring your child to us for a consultation from the age of 6.

Why removable braces are sometimes important
The aim of removable treatment is to make sure the upper and lower jaws fit together well, to create space for the permanent teeth to come through, or to correct serious misalignments of individual teeth so that surgery can be avoided later on. In other words: removable braces primarily correct misalignments of the jaw. Misaligned teeth are then corrected afterwards with invisible aligners or classic silver brackets.
A misaligned jaw caused, for example, by oral habits (thumb-sucking, dummies) should definitely be treated or corrected in childhood. Particular attention should also be paid to breathing. We normally breathe through the nose, which acts as a natural bacteria filter and so prevents respiratory illnesses from developing. If your child mainly breathes in through the mouth (myofunctional disorder), retraining the swallowing and breathing function is strongly advised. This is done through a dental examination and a referral to a speech therapist.
When to use removable braces
Treatment with removable appliances is carried out while children have baby teeth and mixed teeth (when baby teeth fall out and the permanent teeth come through). To determine the best time, we recommend the first check-up from the age of 6.
Invisible aligners for children
Currently the most advanced treatment option among removable braces is invisible aligners for children. These clear aligners are designed to develop the shape of the dental arch and create space for the teeth that are still coming through. This allows the jaws to catch up in their development, enlarging the space in the mouth — which in turn has the positive effect that the tongue has more room and can take up its correct position. In this way, tongue dysfunctions are prevented.
When do invisible aligners make sense for children?
For invisible aligners for children, too, we use our iTero® Element™ scanner to produce and digitally optimise the individual braces. We do NOT need a SILICONE or PLASTER IMPRESSION. That’s what our 3D scanner is for. We scan your children’s teeth once and use the 3D data to digitally optimise and produce the individual braces.
Alternatively, we can also offer traditional removable braces. At Eltz, these come in various colours and designs that your son or daughter can help choose. That makes wearing them more fun. Removable braces are only worn in the afternoon and during the night. In general, treatment with baby teeth and mixed teeth takes between 12 and 18 months.

Mainly for younger children whose jaw growth can still be guided. Treatment while children still have only baby teeth is rare — when we do treat, it is to avoid surgery later on.
Yes — if your child qualifies for free braces (Gratis Zahnspange), younger children are treated with removable braces, free of charge and with no additional payment. All about free braces
We set that out in the treatment plan. What matters is consistent cooperation: the more reliably the braces are worn, the shorter the treatment.
No. We use a 3D scanner — no silicone, no plaster. The teeth are scanned once, and the braces are custom-made from the scan.
It happens, and it can be solved. We talk with the child, not just about them, and find a way together. More on this in our guide
